Yellowstone

Yellowstone National Park is the first national park in the United States, and the world!  The park was established on March 1, 1872, and spans across three states – Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho.  The beauty of Yellowstone was evident in every adventure experienced during our three-day stay.

Those who have been reading my blogs for some time now know that when I travel, I always bring at least two books with me.  There is always time to read at the airport, on the plane, or before bed.  I must admit though, on this trip, I was having so much fun with my two friends and reading was not a priority.  However, before catching up with my friends at the beginning of this trip, I began reading a very good book by Sister Kathleen Glavich, SND.  What I read in her book titled A Love Affair with God presents the perfect beginning for this blog.

A quote by Gerard Manley Hopkins, SJ was noted in Sister Kathleen’s book on God’s dynamic presence in creation.  “The world is charged with the grandeur of God,” Hopkins wrote.  “All things therefore are charged with love and are charged with God…”  A quote from Saint Angela of Foligno was also noted in Sister Kathleen’s book which simply said, “The world is pregnant with God!”  As I explored the geysers and hot springs and abundant wildlife throughout all of Yellowstone, I thought of Sister Kathleen’s book and the beauty of creation that God has provided for all of us.

We made our reservations a year earlier for the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone.  While waiting for our rooms, we noticed a schedule on the check in counter listing the times predicting when the Old Faithful geyser would erupt.  We headed for the viewing area near the Inn and waited patiently with hundreds of other visitors.  Old Faithful was named in 1870 during one of the many expeditions in the park.  This geyser was the first to be named and is highly predictable – with approximately a 10-to-15-minute margin of error.

I must say, Old Faithful did not disappoint.

After settling in our rooms, we began exploring the beautiful Inn.  There was so much to see.

The next day, we drove the Grand Loop Road in Yellowstone.  This road is a 140-mile paved road that forms a figure-eight shape.  The road is divided into two main sections: the Upper Loop and the Lower Loop.

It was during this time that we saw bison on the road near our car.  I was grateful to be in the car when they made their debut.

On our last day in the park, we decided to explore the many boardwalk areas near the Inn which led us to a short but steep hike that gave us a different view of Old Faithful.

Here we are at the top of the hike, exhausted but happy beyond words!

We ended our adventure at one of the ice cream counters near the Inn.

Yellowstone took my breath away!  Truly, the grandeur of God is on display in every section of this park.

Before heading to our next national park, we stopped at Helena, the capital of Montana and visited the Cathedral of St. Helena.

This cathedral was modeled after a beautiful cathedral in Vienna, Austria.  The construction for the Cathedral of St. Helena began in 1908 with its first Mass held in November 1914.

Enjoy the video below as I share the geysers, hot springs, bison, and so much more from beautiful Yellowstone National Park.  Also included in the video is footage from the Cathedral of St. Helena.

This adventure is not yet complete.  There is one more national park that we visited along with a beautiful lake town in Idaho.  Stay tuned for the next blog with updates on my new books coming soon.
